Who are York Systems Changers?

York Systems Changers are people with a keen interest in wanting to explore radical ways of improving outcomes for people experiencing multiple complex needs across York.

We are looking for people working at all levels who can see the ways in which the system that they are involved in needs to change so it can work better for the people it’s trying to serve.

It might feel hard to know how your insights and experience could influence wider change, but we hope the Systems Changers Programme would help you to do that, as well as providing an opportunity to work alongside a group of passionate people.

The course will test out new approaches to real problems facing people with multiple and complex needs in York.

This will be the second cohort of people to come through York Systems Changers following the running of the programme in 2019, and is a part of building a community of change makers. York Systems Changers is underpinned by the work of York’s Multiple and Complex Needs (MCN) Network which brings together a wide and diverse group of people aiming to create a healthier system for those experiencing multiple disadvantage across the city.

We are keen to have participants who are drawn from or working with diverse communities, and those who are interested in the role of discrimination within systems.

Due to COVID-19 we will run this course online through Zoom.

What commitment is involved for Systems Changers?

  • We will come together for 19 half day afternoon sessions (3-4 hours)

  •  There'll be 1 session per week exploring the systems that you work in York

  • Some of the work will be completed in a persons work and/or area of the system they are involved in

  • To reimburse participants’ organisations for the time they spend on the programme, a £3,200 payment can be made direct or in kind to the wider team and organisation

We've designed the programme to give participants:

  • A space to reflect on their experience and insights

  • An opportunity to work with a group of systems changers to effect positive change

  • Ways to develop new skills and methods to have more impact

  • Opportunities to influence the wider system through running continuous prototypes and experiments

  • Access to a range of practical tools and methodologies which will provide insight and skills to influence the system around you

  • Opportunities to start to shift the system in York so that it works better for people facing multiple and complex needs

  • One to one coaching to support your personal development

  • Ways of including your organisation and colleagues in the programme

We will also work with your managers to gain their support for your attending the course. We aim that there will also be broader benefits to organisations as well as the wider system in York from participants involvement in Systems Changers.

Systems Changers York is an initiative of MCN York who are coming together to improve the lives of people in York. It’s funded by Lankelly Chase.

Please note: We welcome applications from people with lived experience of the issues surrounding multiple needs, so if you aren’t currently working for an organisation and/or don’t have a manager then you don’t need to have those parts filled in. Just let us know.

  • “I've learned a lot about myself and how assertive/confident I can be when motivated by a sense of an injustice and misuse of power.”

  • “I have developed more confidence to speak in group settings and raise difficult conversations.”

  • “I am more inclined to try and encourage more open and honest conversations across the system and improve communication and collaboration.”
